The problem is that your software expects to see a serial port with 
standard address and IRQ.  A serial port
created by most adaptors from a USB port has neither.  The one found to 
work is the Belkin F5U103, available
from BrandsMart or CompUSA (or several websites) for about $70.  It can 
create a normal COM1 with address
of 3F8 and IRQ4 (and COM2,3,4 the same way if you need more than one).  
I use two of these  adaptors on my
Celeron notebook which has two USB ports.  I have yet to try any Windows 
or DOS software that doesn't recognize them.
