[Elecraft] K1 switches - soldering the pins

I've just installed the switches on the control board of my K1. The pins
were pretty short and there wasn't much poking through the board to solder.
In fact the ends of the pins were more or less flush with the under side of
the board, but I managed to get the tip of the iron on them and because the
holes were plated through this seems to have worked. I've done some
continuity tests through the switches and they work OK.

My question is, is this intentional, or are the switches in my K1 kit not to
the usual specification? Soldering them wasn't impossible, but it seemed odd
to have to 'bodge' the job like I did.
