[Elecraft] KX1 dsiplay problem

I am building KX1 S/N 670.  

 

I finished the part 1 assembly.  The resistance checks were all OK.  The
white LED works fine when S1 is activated.  I got no display when I powered
up S2.  No smoke or other obvious problems.  DC voltage, and AC voltage
checks in the first alignment and test step are all AOK.

 

I went to the troubleshooting guide-problem 24 in the table is LED display.
Display is installed in correct orientation.  No display pins shorted to
ground.  All the U1 pins are straight and in the socket.  RP1 has no shorts
and measured correct resistance across each pair of pins.  All the solder
joints look wet and OK to me.  I have been super careful to observe all ESD
precautions-wrist strap, static dissipating mat.  

 

Any ideas?  Is the display itself likely to be the problem?  If so, any way
to troubleshoot the display itself?
