[Elecraft] Best Radio for a Scout Camp

Hi Jeff:

I think you need to get away from the 'boat anchor' class of radios ie.
Drakes, etc. Although I love them, they are a bit untennable in the field. I
would say something like a TS-440S or TS-450 makes sense. You can easily
work digital modes and they have excellent auto-tuners. As far as Jim's
comments, the first is not germane to the discussion and needs to be
rejected out of hand. The second comment makes sense with the same line of
thought as above. Of course, the K2 would be first-class ! ;)

I have both TS-440S and TS-450 I could part with - was thinking about
designating these for startup school programs. The '450 has full Kenwood
filters. Respond off list.

Two responses.

First, I would refuse to participate in any Boy Scout activities
because of their discrimatory stance with respect to gays.

Second, I think a radio like the TenTec Omni family that has a very
simple user interface and a rugged and well protected output stage
(using the TenTec power supply) is a good choice. Also, I would try to
configure the station, including its antenna system, so that the
minimum of antenna tuning is needed, and add a good auto tuner.

And I think that the design of the K2 and K2/100 strongly commends
them to this sort of operation, especially if one of the auto tuners is
present.
