Two responses. 

First, I would refuse to participate in any Boy Scout activities
because of their discrimatory stance with respect to gays. 

Second, I think a radio like the TenTec Omni family that has a very
simple user interface and a rugged and well protected output stage
(using the TenTec power supply) is a good choice. Also, I would try to
configure the station, including its antenna system, so that the
minimum of antenna tuning is needed, and add a good auto tuner. 

And I think that the design of the K2  and K2/100 strongly commends
them to this sort of operation, especially if one of the auto tuners is
present.
