Second, I think a radio like the TenTec Omni family that has a very
simple user interface and a rugged and well protected output stage
(using the TenTec power supply) is a good choice. Also, I would try to
configure the station, including its antenna system, so that the
minimum of antenna tuning is needed, and add a good auto tuner.
And I think that the design of the K2 and K2/100 strongly commends
them to this sort of operation, especially if one of the auto tuners is
present.
I think the problem is that a K2 can probably be placed in an unknown
and inoperative mode by operation of front panel controls.
The question is: is there a default reset mode, and can proper
operation be restored from that that condition by a standard cookbook
procedure, again totally from the front panel (or maybe even over a
'phone line?)
And also leads me to one of my questions: Has anyone put together an
operation and maintenance manual separate from the construction
manuals? Since the manuals are available in PDF format, I think it can
all be done with a the proper selection of pages, and then possibly
printed in a smaller format more appropriate to the size of the radio,
but haven't tried that yet myself. As it is now, various items are spread
over several physical manuals, and interspersed with lots of detail
that's useful once during construction.
