[Elecraft] The K2 and the serial port

Perhaps that will prevent XP hanging (like I say, I've never experienced
it), but I can recall the issue of the radio being keyed when the PC boots
occurring ever since I first connected a computer to a radio, which was
well before I had XP (and before I had a K2 come to that.) The first
occurrence is when the BIOS initialises the serial ports, before Windows
even gets started., so I'd be surprised if a simple Registry hack would
completely eliminate this unwanted keying.

I still think it's advisable to turn the radio off (or disconnect the key
and PTT connections from the computer, or make sure the radio is in SSB
mode) before booting up. It may not be so big a deal to just transmit a
couple of long dashes at full power (though the guy that's using the
frequency might disagree) but one day it might happen when the rig isn't
connected to an antenna, like it did to me (fortunately no harm done.)
