Jerry, see if your digital meter can be told to stay in one range.  Sounds 
like it is fooling itself via its autoranging.  Some meters apply different 
currents/voltages as they step through their ranges and can run afoul of 
diode junctions.  You could also blow the dust off ye olde analogue VOM.
