[Elecraft] side tone level volume on a K2

First a little background: I've built a few kits before, but I'm more mechanically-inclined than electronically-inclined.  Anyway, I've just finished a K2 in anticipation of getting a technician plus code license.  When I got to the side tone level check, I discovered that I had a side tone, but I could not get its volume to change by turning the VFO knob.  The side tone pitch,however, does change as it should when the VFO knob is turned.  Does anyone have any idea where the problem might be?  Thanks, Jef.
