I hope you report back your experiences with the K2 and winter backpacking.
I love camping in the winter. The biggest downside is the long cold nights
in the tent. I was not a HAM the last time I was able to go winter camping,
but I have given some thought as to how to take a radio when I am able to
resume winter camping.

My only HF radio is a K2. It is great for portable operations, but I have
some concerns for cold weather. The battery will have significantly
reduced capacity in the cold. A bigger problem is the LCD display. I have
not tested it, but it is not likely to be visible in sub freezing
temperatures. I would test this before taking off. The ergonomics are not
optimal either. How do you operate a K2 while in a sleeping bag to stay
warm? I am sure there are ways around this, and I would like to hear how it
works out.

The new KX1 seems like the perfect choice for winter. The LED display will
work just fine in the cold, and it is small enough to operate while in a
sleeping bag. This will keep the batteries warm and the operator happy.
Only problem I see is taking notes. I guess I better learn to copy code in
my head.

Good luck
