R1 can be replaced with a pot, but it's a painful thing to do. I've done
it with a very small pot (SMT style), but I don't really know why I took
the effort to do it, drilling holes etc.
The recommended way is to turn AGC on/off on a quiet band and parallel
R1 (51 k) with resistors in the 100+ k range until there is no
noticeable difference in audio with AGC on or off. Alternatively a
voltage in the AGC circuit can be measured (nom. 3.9V).
If you would like to see how a pot can be fitted, then follow the K2
link on my homepage, but again it is not something I would recommend.
