Another option would be to temporarily replace R1 with 2 wires going to 
a pot. Adjust the pot until you get the desired AGC setting, remove the 
pot, measure its resistance (without turning the shaft), and put that 
value resistor where R1 was. Sounds a lot easier than drilling holes in 
the board, etc. Also, in the worst case, you can reverse the process if 
necessary and put the original R1 back without messing up the board.
