Paul,
It certainly sounds like your 'birdies' are actually externally generated
signals - real birdies will be heard with the antenna disconnected.  I would
be inclined to look to a TV - TV horizontal oscillator radiation will appear
about every 15 kHz and is quite noticable on 160 and 80 meters - if it is
your own TV, you can turn it off, but if it is a neighbors - well, you do
what you can!
