I use Top Ten band decoders here and use the latter option you mentioned.
That is, I use the K2 serial interface to inform the software (WriteLog, TR,
DX4Win...) what the K2 frequency is and let the software drive the TT
decoder via a parallel port which cables directly to the TT box.    I also
use the TT box to buffer my computer CW to the K2 so you get that with the
same port and cable for free.   In TR, you can also sense paddle inputs via
this parallel port and I added a miniature stereo jack to my TT box to make
this possible.    Works well.   Not sure what I'm going to do when I end up
migrating to XP someday as WriteLog does not support parallel ports in XP...
