I have ham radio to thank for my college education. Also in '61 I got a
job at a local BC station as a transmitter engineer; although a 1st
'phone was required in this case, I was able to pass the test thanks to
my ham radio experience. We had a 1935-vintage Western Electric 5 KW
transmitter that the chief engineer had salvaged from a swamp in Jersey,
and that old rig taught me a lot (sometimes with loud noises). I
enjoyed fixing the blow-ups, climbing the towers, standing in the power
room looking for arcs in the 12 KV supply, and building ham equipment in
the shop. I learned to get up every morning at 4:30, which I guess was
good discipline. Meanwhile, they paid me $70 a week, which more than
covered my living expenses at school.
