When I took the Advanced Amateur test in 1956 it was 15 wpm on 5-character
code groups. The Radio Inspector sent at 17 wpm and allowed us a couple of
mistakes. Straight key only, no bugs, no mills.
In the theory test, he kept asking questions until he'd found out everything
you knew. Then he stopped.

Made me chuckle Eric! When I took my General Test (circa 1958 down here in
the States) it was 13 WPM in 5 character blocks sent using a machine and you
had to have one minute of perfect copy (I believe that is 5 times 13 or 65
characters). You had a pencil with which to write it down. After the code
test, we all sat around while the examiner checked our copy. he would call
your name and say, "passed" or "failed". This went on for some time as there
were about 40 of us there that day (I was in a town that the FCC visited
once every 3 months back then).
All of a sudden the examiner said, "Mr. Smith (not his real name) you are a
very lucky man..... you copied exactly the right number of characters....
passed". Then he went back to the passed fail announcement mode as before.
