In 1961, I found myself out of work and searching for a job.  My girl 
friend's uncle did the hiring at a UHF TV station
in Springfield, MA.  He hired me with no experience on the basis of my 
ham license (General) and on the condition that I
obtained a First Class Radiotelephone license within two years.  I had 
to drive from Springfield to Boston to take that
test, and took it three times before I passed it.  After passing it on 
that third try, figured I might as well make good use of
that trip while I was on a roll, and try the Extra Class..  No sweat, 
heck of a lot easier than the commercial test.  :-)
Like others have reported, I had to have a minute of perfect copy and 
send 20 WPM on a straight key.  I remember
the written included the drawing of schematics and no multiple choice 
questions.  Things have changed a bit...
