Dan:

I had the advantage of having to take code practice everyday for 30 minutes
in my last two years of high school. I took the vocational track and
studied electronics. The instructor, Steve Riggs, W4KNP, had CW in the
course. He was preparing us to be commercial radio operators and repairmen.
Several of us got our ham licenses and are still active. In fact our
instructor is still working as transmitter chief at a local television
station. The junior year final was the 3rd Class Radiotelephone License
and the senior final year was the 2nd Class Radio Telephone License and
several of us got the 2nd Telegraph too..

On the ocassion of our 40th high school class reunion I was able to contact
all of the12 guys that were in our class and 9 of us attended an
appreciation dinner for our instructor. It was a surprise and his wife got
him there for the event. He was totally shocked. He had not seen many of
us in 40 years. We gave him a very nice plaque and a Yaesu VHF/UHF
Transceiver. This all occured on the morning before Hurricane George came
ashore here in Mobile the same night....LOL In fact the restaurant was
boarding up the windows while we were eating. It really was a fun thing and
we plan to do it again at the 50th if he is still with us. He had a most
profound effect on my life and was second only to my dad, Earle Younce,
K4SKX who is a Silent Key.
