This *MAY* have to do with lead dress.  When I first made this mod myself,
I noticed a slight S-meter reading on one of the sidebands on receive with
no signals present (I don't remember whether it was LSB or USB).  The cure
was to re-route the lead connecting to the base of the '2222 away from the
traces of the nearby chip on the board.  Problem solved.  :-)

But even without the mod, I think the carrier suppression could be better
than what it is.
