[Elecraft] Vox gain

Hi,

I am running a RTTY program that doesn't let you use PTT using hardware or
CAT, so I tried to use VOX on the K2. Why the program doesn't do this is a
side issue I don't want to get into. For normal RTTY operation I have the
gain turned down by setting SSBA to 1 and the compression set to SSBC
1-1. Then I set Power to a little over the power I want, like 7 watts, and
set the audio from the computer so that I get 5 watts. On the K2/100, read
40 and 30 watts. That part works fine, but I get no VOX. I have to
advanced the AF input to the point that distortion is occurring. Power
output goes up to whatever is set on the power control, and the ALC
functions. Frequently, I get a HiCurr indication, and the power level
pumps (goes down to 1 watt or so because of ALC action, and then up to set
power level). If I decrease the AF input level to the point where this is
not happening, no VOX. I don't think I missed a VOX gain, just a VOX delay
of 0.4 or 1, which are all the controls you need for voice. Set SSBA to 2
or 3 and it does the same, except I don't have to use as much audio from
the computer, and the level is so low I may get some feedback.

You get the same results if you try to use VOX with PSK31 or any of the
other sound card digital modes.

So Wayne, if you are looking for something to put in that new additional
memory you have, how about an enhancement to add a VOX gain to help us
digital folks? You could do it with a menu entry, because, once set, it
doesn't need to be changed.

Tnx,
