[Elecraft] Ten-Tec Mike

I just finished building the TenTec T-Kit 1201 (which is the same as
the TT 705), and it works fine with the K2. I've not tried picking off
8v to use with the mic and am just using a 9v battery. I wired it for
Icom configurations and have used it with the K2, IC-910H and IC-228H.
All things considered, I like the microphone quite well, but.....I
can't recommend building it as a kit!
I consider myself a reasonably competent kit builder having built the
K2, all K2 accessories, numerous Heathkits, four or five QRP
transceivers, and most of my test gear -- all kits. I've also built
three or four T-Kits from Ten-Tec, and I'm a long-time fan of Ten-Tec
having owned probably half a dozen TT transceivers over the years.
However, the T-Kit 1201 is probably the worst kit I have ever built.
Some of the instructions are extremely confusing. Component numbers are
not silk-screened on the board. The view of the circuit board that
shows where the components go is virtually unreadable and resulted in
three times that I inserted the wrong component in the wrong space
because I couldn't read it. I believe that Ten-Tec is committed to
quality - but they should be ashamed of themselves for selling this kit
as it is. If I had had this poor experience with other T-Kits, I would
never have gone back. Fortunately, my other experiences with T-Kits
have been fine.
So, I'd recommend the microphone if purchased assembled....but I'd
steer far away from the kit.
