Hi

I would use a Powersonic PS-1228 gel cell. This battery is more square than
the 1229 that is used in the K2 but has close to the same power rating (2.8
A hr). This battery will fit into an EC1 enclosure that is the same size and
matches the K1. There is room for a charging circuit for use with a wall
wart power supply or a solar panel. This battery would run the K1 quite a
bit longer than the AA pack and you can run at 5 watts rather than 3 watts.
The 1228 battery is a little harder to find but many of the larger suppliers
have them or can order them. The K1 and EC1/battery weigh in at 4.5 lbs. A 7
amp hour gel cell battery will weigh more than 5 lbs by itself. If you are
away from a power source for an extended time a 3-5 watt solar panel would
keep you on the air just about indefinitely.
