Charles,
Static mats and wrist straps are always a good idea, but they are optional.
The instructions for the K2 state when you should be careful (as when
plugging in the microprocessors).
Myself, I build on an anti-static mat and put on the wrist strap whenever I
am to handle a static sensitive device such as MOSFETS, microprocessors, and
such. I do not use the wrist strap for bipolar devices such as transistors
and diodes and certainly the capacitors and resistors do not need it. Once
even sensitive components are soldered into the circuit board, the normal
ground paths are present and great care is not usually required - although
if you work on carpet in a low humidity situation, you should take all the
precautions that you can.
Small anti-static mats and reasonably priced wrist straps have been
available at Marlin P. Jones & Assoc. www.mpja.com. I haven't checked for
them recently, but it is worth a look

Subject: [Elecraft] Hello & a question
Hello all,
I am waiting for my K2, mailed payment 3/7/03. I chose the K2 because I
became so impressed with Elecraft as I found not one negative thing said
about them or the K2, and because I grew up in the Heath kit era, I wanted
to start my ham career with a kit (new tech with general credit on 1/8/03).
While I wait for the rig, I am setting up the assembly area to build the K2,
and then I will be rebuilding tube radios from days gone by to help pay for
the next kit.
The question I would like to know is, how important is static control with
solid state kits? Are static mats and wrist straps a must or is just being
careful adequate?
Many thanks in advance.
sincerely,
Charles, KC9DAO
