It sounds to me like the adapter is using pins 6-9 of the db9 connector 
for data flow control (as in a standard rs232 convention) which is 
interferring with the kat100 which uses these lines as data between the 
k2 and the tuner.

Try the system on the real rs232 port without the usb interface and see 
if it works.  Remember that the cable for the computer/rig/kat100 is not 
a standard rs232 cable.  If it still doesn't work, make sure the 
computer program isn't trying to use CTS/RTS or DSR/DTR as a control for 
ptt or something, as that would shut down the k2 system.
