You really should try a bigger antenna when portable... fibreglass fishing
poles are hard to beat and cheap. I've worked all over the world without
great difficulty when using either a 23' or 32' fishing pole supporting a
light weight doublet (with 300 Ohm ribbon cable), or a full sized ground
plane. Beware of the tuning limitations of the K1/KAT1 when using a doublet,
but for starters a 66' doublet with 32' of 300 Ohm ribbon tunes on on a KAT1
on 40/30/20/15 (the bands in my K1/4). The doublet is very quick to deploy,
something like a ground plane takes a few more minutes.
