Harry,
I would suggest that you check both the headphone jack and the external
speaker jack.  Both have contacts to disconnect the internal speaker when a
proper plug is inserted, and I suspect that the contacts have failed on the
contacts that perform this circuit opening task.  The headphone jack is the
prime suspect since you state that you hear nothing when plugging headphones
into the external speaker jack.
