Martin,
The bandpass filter alignment and the L34 alignment are independent and can
be done at any time. These should be done with a single signal source
rather than a wideband noise source.
It is best to verify that the reference osc is as close to 4MHz as you can
get it before doing CAL PLL.
The CAL FIL alignment (IF filter widths and their relative BFO frequencies)
is where you use Spectrogram and the noise generator to great advantage - in
that you can observe the passband shape and then adjust the BFO to place the
passband at the audio frequency that you want to hear, normally for CW the
frequency of the sidetone pitch should occur at the peak of the filter (that
is a good relationship for filters more narrow than 2x the sidetone pitch,
filters wider than 2x sidtone should position the BFO so that only one side
of zero beat is audible).
For the SSB filters, one would adjust the BFO so that the passband low
audio frequency starts at about 200 to 300 Hz depending on how far down the
filter slope you are observing for the starting frequency.
How I didn't cause confusion - it is much easier to do than to say it!!!
