Ground for single wire makes it work as an antenna, and I mean quarter wave
counterpoises, not just one wimpy ground rod.  Make a quarter wave radial
for each band you plan to use, and better to make several in the compass
directions of the DX you plan to work.

A single wire is my least favorite antenna--- as where long enough to give
gain, it is also very directional off the open end away from the fed end at
rig.

A balanced antenna is so much easier to implement and is well behaved, ie
not spark to the lip from the chassis of the radio or mike.
