[Elecraft] Carolina Windom

That's what I'm using at my mother's house. Strung between two pecan
trees (sure miss those California redwoods!) so it is not as high as it
should be, and I had to let one end dangle down because I don't have
enough span for it to go straight up full length. The Elecraft KAT100
tunes it on all bands 80 and up, and I'm making contacts. That doesn't
say it's worth the money, or that it is better than other possible
antennas, just that it is keeping me happy.

There is an article on the web about somebody's antenna that is just an
80-meter dipole fed with 90 feet of 450 ohm line, and then he puts in
additional lengths of line to match it on different bands. It turns out
that 100 feet of 450 ohm line is within 10% of the optimum length on all
bands. The company that makes the Carolina Windom also makes a thing they
call the "remote balun" which it seems to me would be a good way to bring
coax into the house and to a single-ended antenna tuner. Tho cheaper
baluns might work just as well.

I have a friend who has a store-bought antenna that seems to work on the
same principle. It is a shortened 80M dipole, with loading coils in the
legs, and is fed with 100 feet of 450 ohm line. The installation
instructions said not to cut the line much, and after learning about
the preceding antenna I can understand why.
