There has been a couple of 'mods" in this area. One is quite detailed. It involves
the placement of some ultra bright LEDs. I have sued some white ones and they worked
very nicely. I'd imagine that the next front panel board revision might possibly add
this as an improvement. The bright LEDs add a small increase in current drain but
worth it when you are doing QRP portable at night or under "loss of power"
conditions!

Subject: [Elecraft] K1 backlight
| Hi folks -
| Tony, G7IGG, brings up a point that I think was briefly touched on ages
| ago, but, starting another K1 makes me want to check in on it again. The
| option to flip on backlighting would be pretty neat for the K1.
| I know the K1 was beautifully designed to minimize power and weight and
| size, but I am wondering if a "grain of wheat" bulb could be put into the
| circuit and then an extra function added to one of the existing switches to
| allow the user to turn the lighting off and on at will. I wonder if there is
| room left on the K1's main chip to do this (Eric and Wayne?) A little mod
| kit of chip and bulb would be pretty neat.
| Perhaps the tiny bulbs don't consume enought power to merit the need of an
| off/on switch? I don't know since I'm just a solder jockey. If power
| consumption is not an issue, then it would be nice to hear how anybody may
| have approached the question: part numbers and install procedure?
| Have a healthy and happy New Year everyone.
