Daniel, this could gen up some interesting answers.

If you read part 97 of the FCC rules governing amateur radio, I am sure you
will find the formal answer and you should have already.

But, as you say, to quickly explain to a lay security screener, is a task.
Amateur radio is an FCC federally licensed radio service for experimenters
and persons supporting emergency communications in disaster, would be my
succinct explanation.

As several have stated, no one has been asked for their license, or given
much attention.  But, it pays to be ready and have a copy on you, as you
should anyway if you are going to operate your radio somewhere on your trip.
