Edward,
Perhaps a suggestion on a tool with a bit more utility... Hakko 808
desoldering tool. This is a self-contained, vacuum assisted solder sucker
that works *very well*. As a side benefit, it strips/tins toroid leads
easily! Here's how: Clamp wound toroid in a vise or other holder. Insert
lead into the heated nozzle of the 808 and wait a second or two. Feed in
a little solder at the nozzle, and press the 808 trigger. The wire
insulation is whisked away along with the excess solder, tinning the lead
as you go. There's no dangerous pot of molten solder to mess with, and
you get a desoldering tool that works really FB on PC boards!
I purchased mine through Tequipment.NET about a year ago. They had the
lowest price anywhere and service was good -- they are advertising the
Hakko 808 now at about $165. Certainly not the least expensive solution,
but if you ever get into modifying PCBs, the ease and speed of a vacuum
desoldering tool will be truly appreciated. It's easier than soldering!!!
No connection to them, but thoroughly satisfied customer!
GL,
Steve

Subject: [Elecraft] Tinning toroids with a solder pot
I've been thinking of buying a solder pot to tin the leads on all the
toroids I'll have to make (K2, AATU, SSB, 160m etc etc).....
