[Elecraft] Are some DINs created less equal?

Band data comes out of the FT-1000MP on an 8-pin DIN female jack. I need 
to make up a new cable so I picked up an 8-pin male DIN plug at Fry's. 
Its pins are visibly smaller than those of the old plug and appear to be 
arranged in a slightly smaller circle. It won't fit into the jack. No, 
it is NOT "mini-DIN." Its shell is the same diameter as the original and 
the pins are quite close to correct. What do I not know?
