[Elecraft] Tinning toroids with a solder pot

Of course there's an alternative to the pot if you don't mind taking an
extra minute or two per toroid. That's to scrape the leads clean then =
tin
them and forget the hot solder/burnt enamel process altogether.=20
It doesn't take too sharp of an edge. I use a very dull knife. The paint
peels off in fair-size strips once the skin of the paint is broken. A =
dull
knife helps avoid nicking the copper wire in the process.=20
If you unwrap each lead a 1/4 turn (so it stick out at right angles to =
the
plane of the toroid) and work against the edge of your bench, it's =
really
easy to clean the wire high enough that the paint-free area up to the =
toroid
itself, preventing any possibility of not getting a good solder joint
because the wire was pulled through past the tinned area.=20
Then a little tinning and the toroid is ready to drop in.=20

I've been thinking of buying a solder pot to tin the leads on all the
toroids I'll have to make (K2, AATU, SSB, 160m etc etc). I'm happy with =
the
winding part but can't seem to get the tinning right using the blob of
solder method (admittedly using a fine solder tip). ...
