Hi Alan -
Thanks ALan and others. I got all the info I need now! I am just now acquiring a "used" Bird that has literally no time on it - but without slugs. So based on what you and othjers are saying - buy the slugs new and I should be OK!

If you have not dropped the slug, chances are it is OK.  I is cheaper to buy 
a new slug, that is the variable, not the meter.
