Phil,

Very strong signals DO give me bars, but they are far lower than my other
radios. Does your S meter show anything at all? I talked to an English
station SSB last night at 10 Watts, he was at 100 Watt. I got a 35 report
from him. His audio was a 5, but my S meter showed 1 bar most of the time
with second bar flickering once in awhile. I can't see a report of 19 or 29
as being reasonable. I've recalibrated the S meter a number of times. Makes
no difference.

Almost all my problems have been builder errors/omissions. I suspect the
same here, but I haven't been able to find anything wrong yet. What I'd like
to know is how I can calibrate the S meter with incoming signals so it means
something.
