Dan,
I have underground power lines in my subdivision. They are twisted,but not
shielded in metal, and therefore radiate almost as well, in causing local
noise, as overhead lines.
They are only buried 18 inches deep. They are medium voltage, ie there are
transformer pedestals that step down the line voltage to house voltage every
8 houses or so. And we have had several outages due to fire ant infestation
of transformers, water ingress, and deterioration of insulation in soil.
Also, bad splices of the crimp type. We still get fuses knocked out by
lightning surge as well.
