I use a simple inductance meter that operates at one of two low
frequencies, and the toroids I measure match the calculated values for
the core as well as exhibit the right value at the operating frequency.
I don't recall the exact frequency but it's something in the LF range I
believe. 

Maybe the problem is you guys are fooling around with torroids instead
of toroids...

Yes you're correct on the inductance meter and I should have added at
the operating frequency range.  I had assumed this in my original
e-mail.  The wrong size of wire can in some cases cause enough change
were turns may have to be adjusted.  This is most important when winding
the toroid for the VFO. Close gauge will probably not make enough
difference to matter.  I say try it and see what happens.  Can't hurt
anything and after all it's a learning experience.
