If I'm using external RX antenna and have 8R HOLD keeping the amp keyed 
between letters .... I'd still want QSK.

Why?  In a pileup you can be dumping your call and part way through your 
call you hear the DX station come back so you stop sending.  Or you think 
the DX station came back to you so while you are sending the report you 
hear the DX station start sending ..... Hmmmmmm, didn't come back to me.
