In my opinion, Barry, the BFO, PLL and xtal filter upgrade kits are best 
done in the original build -- since thay do not affect the 
functionality, etc of the radio.  You are just installing components 
which will improve performance -- and avoiding having to remove 
components later.

Some other mods are not in this category and should be installed after 
you have first built and checked out the basic rig.

But do ask Elecraft directly on this.
