I, too, wouldn't mind owning a Hakko 808, but they ARE a little pricey. 
Another poor man's Hakko is the GC Solder Popper, in the $35 price range. I 
had become fairly adept with desoldering braid, but am now a convert to the 
Solder Popper. I like the one hand operation. The Solder Popper is not 
temperature controlled, however, so one must be careful to not dwell too 
long on the solder joint. So far, it has worked like a charm with no 
collateral damage. I bought mine locally, but one vendor (who also sells 
the Hakko) is:
