I've been using a radio shack de-soldering iron for many years. It's
essentially a soldering iron with a hollow tip. A piece of pipe
attaches to it and then to a squeeze bulb. For me it works great and
it's pretty cheap to buy.

I, too, wouldn't mind owning a Hakko 808, but they ARE a little pricey.
Another poor man's Hakko is the GC Solder Popper, in the $35 price
range. I
had become fairly adept with desoldering braid, but am now a convert to
the
Solder Popper. I like the one hand operation. The Solder Popper is not
temperature controlled, however, so one must be careful to not dwell too
long on the solder joint. So far, it has worked like a charm with no
collateral damage. I bought mine locally, but one vendor (who also sells
