I could not agree more. Check out June issue of CQ. In upper right hand
corner of article on last years July CQ VHF Contest you will find a picture
of our scout troop contest outing. We used 2 817's and a MFJ 9406. I will
say that we used the MFJ for most of the 6 meter contacts because of receive
current draw, we were 100% solar power. This year we will use same with
addition of DK1HE 2 meter QRP kit as it also has receive current of abt
75Ma. Even if you only make it out to local park or hill you will have some
fun, and take a tech class ham with you and maybe you will ignite a spark to
upgrade. 
For the June contest where we have more bands we also use the K2 for a
xverter front end for 222 and 1.2Ghz. 73 Tim O'Rourke KG4CHX
