[Elecraft] E42

I have a K1 that has been reliable for the several months since it was
built.  I recently installed a 4-band unit (real easy to tune on a noisy
band night).  All worked as expected for several weeks.
Tonight, I was listening to the QST code bulletin and the frequency started
drifting-first up and then down.  After a few minutes the "E42" message
displayed.  I was outside at the time and the temp. was around 75-80
degrees. I took the rig inside and a few minutes later the "E42" was gone
and it operated okayfor a few minutes.  I took it back outside now the "E42"
has returned.
I have not begin to troubleshoot the rig yet but wonder if this is a
"common" problem for which there is a "quick fix."  Why has the VFO quit and
what can I do to keep the problem from happening?  Anyone know?
