I've been reading the reflector mail from all of you guys who have been
changing to different microphones on your K2s, and have been wondering
about something.
When it came time for me to wire P1 on the front panel board, I was
loathe to solder the jumper wires onto P1 because it seemed a messy way
of doing it, especially if I decided to change to a differently-wired
microphone in the future. With Elecraft's Heil microphone it would be
easy to install two-pin jumpers across adjacent pins, but I wanted to use
my station microphone which is wired for my Yaesu FT-1000MP.
I thought about the possibility of obtaining a female plug to mate with
P1 so that I could wire it accordingly. In fact, several of these plugs,
each wired for the various configurations, could be kept in reserve for
whenever a different microphone is used. But I decided (perhaps
prematurely) that such a plug mated with P1 would extend too far from the
front panel board to allow installation of the control board.
I ended up wire wrapping P1's pins per the Yaesu configuration. If some
other manufacturer ever comes out with a better big rig for contesting
and DXpeditioning than the FT-1000MP, I'll buy it and I'll rewire my
station microphone as required. It'll be an easy task to unwrap the
wires on P1 and wrap new wires there in the new configuration.
