It sounds like you have been bitten by the same anomaly that I and others
have bitten by and have inadvertently mis-set the sidetone source in the
menu.

Go to primary menu item ST-L.  With the loudness parameter underscored,
tap DISPLAY.  If you have the K2 I/O option (or the KPA100) it should be
set to "U8-4", otherwise it should be set to "U6-25".  (Each tap of the
DISPLAY button toggles it between these two parameters).
