OK. Let me preface this with the statement that I am by NO MEANS trying
this to stir up a battle, nor am I attempting to alienate any group of
people.
With that said, can someone tell me where the notation "Xmas" gained so
much popularity?
In efforts to be politically correct, have we all grown numb to the fact
that the most common written notation of the holiday name strikes out the
actual name "Christ"?
If speed and ease of typing, writing longhand, etc are the motivation, why
is it that we don't call it Cmas?
If you think about it, Christmas is named after the person whos birth
(accurate date or not) it celebrates, Christ.
New Years Day could be shortened to "X-Day" for a savings of 7 letters in
the name.
Would it be tolerated if Martin Luther King Day were abbreviated as
"X-Day?" After all, it would save 15 letters in the name.
How about calling Washingtons Birthday "X-Day?" Thats a savings of 15
letters in the name.
How many veterans and children, widows and widowers of fallen veterans
would it offend if we called Veterans Day and/or Memorial Day "X-Day"
instead? After all, the savings in letters is 7 each , identical to
savings achieved by calling Christmas "Xmas."
The Fourth of July is "Independence Day" but, why not "X-Day?" That is a
savings of 8 or 11 letters, depending on if you call it the Fourth or
Independence day.
Labor Day could be "X-Day" as well for a savings of 4 letters.
Thanksgiving Day is called "Turkey Day" by many which has absolutely
nothing to do with giving Thanks. Why not shorten it to "X-Day" too.
That saves 11 letters!
There is certainly more time savings in many of those abbreviations than
there is in abbreviating Christmas as "Xmas" so why is it that the only
one that gets the "X" is Christmas?
So, if you celebrate Christmas as more than just a time to get presents
and drink eggnog, ask youself - "Is Christ still bearing my X?" X=cross
