Actually, it's been around for nearly 2,000 years now. "X", the Greek
letter "Chi", was used by the very early Christians to mean the
"Christos" or "Christ". The Greek "X" and the symbol of the fish were
used interchangeably for centuries.

It saw a resurgence, from what I know, in the mid-20th century for
probably the same reason it was first popular. It was easier to write.
It made "Christmas" in English a shorter word without altering its
meaning.

And it's why, when I sign off with another Ham this time of year on my
trusty K2 (if I happen to know for sure he/she is a Christian), I might
sign, "73, and Merry Xmas...".

Now if someone would only come up with an appropriate means of
shortening up "Happy Hanukkah" ...

OK. Let me preface this with the statement that I am by NO MEANS trying
this to stir up a battle, nor am I attempting to alienate any group of
people.

With that said, can someone tell me where the notation "Xmas" gained so
much popularity?
