Brian, I have at least a dozen recent samples......one of which, after close inspection with a magnifying glass, I can see, (I THINK ) that it was previously cancelled (very lightly).  They may infact be using some rather sophisticated methods in fact.  

I've learned an important lesson to all of this....I don't put my return address on the envelope.....then......it either gets delivered or ends up in the junk mail box.
