The VisualDSP software is program size constrained, not time limited (at
least the version I have is that way). With 32-bit RISC op codes, I wonder
how much of the DSP-10 functions you can get in the memory limit? Also,
with a proper codec, you can use the Blackfin for video bandwidth
processing. A task well beyond what a soundcard and PC can currently
perform. Even 96 KHz. with the evaluation board's codec is better than most
PC soundcards. I have sent "hate" mail about the price of the full tools.
Even the "special" price of $1750 in the offer is way too much! The
biggest advantage this eval board has is it's additional I/O. You could
remove the PC from the equation if you desired by using the DSP as the
"front panel".
For the basic DSP-10, if you use a PC soundcard for the DSP function, you
still need a "glue" microcontroller to take over the I/O functions. So you
end up tying up the soundcard I/O and a serial or USB port to communicate
with the microcontroller.
What about DSP-10MK2? More and more components of the original design are
getting rare as the DSP-10 ages. The ability to handle a larger bandwidth,
as I understand noise theory, should allow better signal processing. It
would be nice to see a larger chunk of spectrum at microwave.
